Huawei P70 will have an upgraded ultrawide angle camera

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared that Genius Electronic Optical will supply Huawei with an upgraded ultrawide angle camera module for the P70 series. He didn’t go into specifics about the new hardware but said with it, the P70 series will target a 100% to 120% increase in shipments over the P60 series.

The new ultrawide is rumored to have a unique 1G6P lens (with one glass and six plastic elements) and a 1-inch type sensor. This would be a huge upgrade in a segment that sees 1/1.56-inch type sensors at best. Other rumors have suggested a 7P lens, which would be cheaper and easier to manufacture.

Huawei will be aiming for a bigger and more important goal – global impact, 5G connectivity and bringing its own sensors with the P70 series.

The camera system will be a big part of that. It will use the XMAGE platform with a bespoke NPU. The ultra-wide angle camera will reportedly be a major part of the upgrade.

Kuo expects the P70 series to launch in the first half of this year.
